Browns' Pettine: 'Ideal situation' would be taking QB after fourth pick
New Browns coach Mike Pettine said that, ideally, the team would like to take a QB after its No. 4 pick.
With only two quarterbacks currently on the roster, it figures that first-year Browns coach Mike Pettine would want to address the thin position through the draft.
Cleveland has the fourth overall pick, where, presumably, it would have a shot at Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles or any of the other top QB prospects. But Pettine doesn’t sound (smokescreen alert) as if taking a QB is a necessity with the team’s top pick.
“That’s been a big part of the discussion in the draft room. That’s a position that we know we’re going to need to address, and you talk about where you’re going to do it and the impact that it’s going to have on the rest of the team,” he said to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
“Certainly it’s an ideal situation if you can get that quarterback later in the draft and that way you’re drafting a position player at four. But we’re in the business of staying true to our sequence, that if our fourth-best player or somebody rated above that is there at the fourth pick that we’ll feel comfortable turning the card in regardless of what the position is.”
Later in the draft? Is Pettine bluffing? Are the Browns not enamored with any of the top prospects or do they think that their guy (Teddy Bridgewater or Derek Carr, perhaps?) might fall to them at No. 26 or maybe even at No. 35?
One contributing factor could be that Pettine has worked with rookie QBs before from Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez to E.J. Manuel and prefers not to hand the keys to the Browns’ offense over to an unproven prospect. Pick a QB at No. 4 and you’re essentially clicking a stopwatch until said QB lines up under center.
The Browns have been working out former Packers backup Vince Young along with Tyler Thigpen, one of whom may make the team, but the QB job appears to belong to Brian Hoyer, who’s looked good since returning from ACL surgery.
