Browns release QB Wallace, McCoy No. 2 behind Weeden
Colt McCoy said all he wanted was a chance -- and even that appeared slim after the Browns used a first-round pick on 28-year-old now-or-never quarterback Brandon Weeden, who was officially handed the job early in training camp. Colt McCoy said all he wanted was a chance -- and even that appeared slim after the Browns used a first-round pick on 28-year-old now-or-never quarterback Brandon Weeden, who was officially handed the job early in training camp. But McCoy, who has made a career out of being scrappy, avoided the Turk Friday as Cleveland whittled the roster to 53 players, which means … well, we're not sure.
Whatever McCoy's future holds, this much is certain: the team parted ways with veteran backup Seneca Wallace and McCoy is still with the team. There has already been speculation that the Browns could be looking for Weeden's backup from outside the organization. Philadelphia radio host Howard Eskin suggests it could be A.J. Feeley (worth pointing out: Eskin also said that the Eagles had interest in Brett Favre), although the Cleveland Plain Dealer disputes the claim.
This much we know: Wallace's departure means the Browns can also dump his $2.4 million salary. McCoy, meanwhile, played relatively well during the preseason, and given the rough-and-tumble nature of the NFL -- and the AFC North in particular -- it's reasonable to think that he could be called on to relieve Weeden at some point this season. So for the time being it appears that McCoy has gotten that chance he was asking for.
