Cardinals re-sign K Jay Feely to one-year deal
Arizona kicker Jay Feely announced on Twitter on Monday that he's re-signed with the Cardinals.
Happy to announce I am signed back with the @AZCardinals I never wanted to play with different teammates or for another organization.— Jay Feely (@jayfeely) March 10, 2014
Feely was set to become a free agent on Tuesday, but he avoided that by signing his new deal. The new contract is for one-year, according to the Arizona Republic.
The Cardinals kicker had said last week that he wanted to stay in Arizona, "I'm hopeful to be back with Arizona," Feely told KMVP-FM in Arizona on March 6. "We've talked this week and hopefully we'll get something done before free agency starts."
It was no lock that Feely would return to Arizona. The veteran kicker missed missed two very makeable field goals (37, 43) in a 23-20 loss to the 49ers in Arizona's regular-season finale.
Arizona coach Bruce Arians was non-committal when asked about Feely's future in January, "Jay is an unrestricted free agent, so it will be all business from here on out."
Feely's Week 17 performance left a bad taste in his mouth, "I was disappointed with how the season ended last year and obviously [Arizona was] disappointed in the last game -- you know, missing those two kicks -- and that kind of sticks with you," Feely said. "It sticks with everybody, but I've been very happy with the way that I've felt, the way that I've progressed in my career, and hopefully I get a chance."
Before the 49ers game, Feely was 28 of 32 on the season. After going 2 for 4 against San Francisco, Feely ended the year 30 of 36. Feely's 127 points in 2013 was the 12th-highest total in the league.
Feely, who turns 38 in May, will be going into his 14th season in the NFL. The veteran started his career with the Falcons in 2001 and spent four seasons in Atlanta before moving on the New York Giants (2005-06). Feely also spent time with the Dolphins (2007) and Jets (2008-09) before signing with Arizona in 2010.
