Cardinals release Kevin Kolb after QB rejects contract restructure
The Cardinals have released QB Kevin Kolb.
With the Cardinals due to pay quarterback Kevin Kolb a $2 million bonus by 4 p.m. ET Friday, we figured that, unless Kolb agreed to restructure his six-year, $63.5 million contract, Arizona would release him into free agency.
According to the Sideline View’s Adam Caplan, Kolb has rejected a restructuring and, as a result, the Cardinals announced Friday morning that Kolb had been released.
Considering Kolb has had a disastrous reign as the Cardinals' quarterback, he must know he’ll have other opportunities to play. Otherwise, why would he risk losing so much of his money without a backup plan?

This, of course, could be where the Jets come to the rescue. Although New York offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said Mark Sanchez has a leg up to start next season, the Jets also recently signed David Garrard.
Keep in mind, however, Caplan also writes the Cardinals have left open the possibility for Kolb to return, even though Arizona brought in Drew Stanton to compete with Brian Hoyer for the starting job. That makes Kolb's return to the Cardinals an unlikely proposition.
If Kolb tests the free-agent market, it would be awfully interesting to see if the Jets go after him -- especially since they’ll have to pay Sanchez his guaranteed $8.25 million salary regardless of whether he’s on the roster (also, Mornhinweg was Kolb’s offensive coordinator in Philadelphia).
But remember this: Kolb was so horrendous last training camp that then-Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was fighting to save his job at the time, installed John Skelton into the lineup instead of Kolb. Which means Kolb could fit in quite nicely with the rest of the Jets' quarterbacks.
And if the Jets aren’t a possibility, Kolb likely has plenty of other opportunities.
Teams that need a QB for competition or backup purposes: BUF, CLE, NYJ, ATL, NOR, NYG, STL, SF, CHI.— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) March 15, 2013
