CB Cortland Finnegan tweets his goodbye from the Rams
Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan seemingly has just become a free agent.
Thus, Finnegan's disappointing two-year stay in St. Louis is over (as NFL.com reports, Finnegan won't actually be released until after the new NFL season begins but before his bonus is due).
He was due $6 million in 2014, and he would have counted $10 million against the salary cap. But Finnegan played only seven games in 2013 after fracturing his orbital bone, and for each of the past two years, he was ranked by Pro Football Focus as one of the 30 worst cornerbacks in the league. Thus, this move wasn't exactly a surprise.
"There is no way a team still trying to build and with almost no cap room will pay Finnegan $6M, with a $10M cap hit, especially at the end of his career," wrote CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora last month.
Not that it stopped coach Jeff Fisher from throwing some misdirection at us at the NFL combine.
"[Finnegan] overcame a difficult situation," Fisher said. "I understand he's healthy now. And so we expect him back in the offseason program."
Not anymore, apparently.
