CFL's Toronto Argonauts release WR Mike Williams
Wide receiver Mike Williams, the Lions' 10th-overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, was released by the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
Wide receiver Mike Williams, the Lions' 10th-overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft who has been out of the league since 2012, hoped to jumpstart his career when he signed with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts late last month. But before May turned to June, the Argos decided that Williams wasn't a good fit and released him.
It's the latest reminder for Lions fans that former team president Matt Millen a) really loved drafting wide receivers and b) was dreadful at evaluating talent. In the two drafts before Millen selected Mike Williams, he used Detroit's first-round picks on wideouts Charles Rogers (No. 2 overall in '03) and Roy Williams (No. 7 overall in '04).
Rogers lasted just three injury-riddled seasons and totaled 36 receptions, 440 yards and four touchdowns. Roy Williams played for the Lions for four and a half seasons (262 catches, 3,884 yards, 29 TDs) before he was traded to the Cowboys in 2008.
Mike Williams, meanwhile, lasted 22 games in Detroit (37 receptions, 449 yards, 2 TDs) before he was shipped to Oakland in 2007. He was released by the Raiders later that season. Williams was out of the NFL in '08 and '09 before having a resurgence of sorts with the Seahawks under former college coach Pete Carroll. He had a career-best effort in 2010, catching 65 passes for 751 yards and two touchdowns, but he was limited to 18 receptions for 236 yards and a lone score the following season.
And now, after a cup of coffee in the CFL, it's reasonable to think that Williams' football career could be over at the age of 29.
