The San Diego Chargers might have found the team's next Darren Sproles -- or at least a replacement for Ronnie Brown -- in the form of former New England Patriot Danny Woodhead. The Chargers signed Woodhead to a two-year deal on Friday, a move that should put a smile on the face of quarterback Phillip Rivers.
Woodhead became expendable in New England after the Patriots signed former Seahawk Leon Washington on Thursday.
The versatile Woodhead is a dual-threat out of the backfield who totaled 747 yards and seven touchdowns in 2012. Four of those scores, along with 301 yards, came on the ground, while 446 yards and the other three scores came through the air. Woodhead has totaled at least 500 yards in every season since joining the Patriots in 2010.
Woodhead should be an upgrade over situational running back Brown, who's future with the Chargers is up in the air. Brown, who's a free agent, totaled 591 yards (220 rushing, 371 receiving) in 2012 and scored no touchdowns.
The four-year veteran could also end up providing a spark that the Chargers offense has lacked since Sproles left for New Orleans after the 2010 season. San Diego finished 31st in total offense in 2012, a stark contrast from Sproles' final season with the team when the Chargers had the top overall offense in the NFL.
