Colts hire Rob Chudzinski as special assistant to head coach
The Colts announced they hired Rob Chudzinski as special assistant to head coach on Saturday.
Chudzinski was recently fired by Cleveland after one year at the helm. He's now reunited with Chuck Pagano, who he worked with at Miami under former Browns coach Butch Davis.
"Rob and I have a long professional relationship and his résumé speaks for itself," Pagano said in a statement released by the Colts. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and will be a tremendous help to our entire team moving forward. Needless to say, we're excited to have 'Chud' joining our family."
Chud's addition to the staff should be a good thing for the Colts. He has experience working with running back Trent Richardson, who was traded this past season from Cleveland to Indy for a first-round pick (No. 26 overall), and he should help provide some offensive creativity that Pep Hamilton's system often lacked.
There will be plenty of Schrute-centric jokes based on Chud's title, but don't be fooled. Often the "special assistant" tag can be used to circumvent offset language in contracts. As an example, the aforementioned Davis took a "special assistant" role with the Buccaneers before the 2012 season that never affected the money he received from the University of North Carolina.
Chudzinski is due $10 million from the Browns after getting canned. It seems unlikely that he would be willing to hand all of that back just for the privilege of working alongside Pagano again.
It's possible that Chudzinski is taking a hit here but the best guess is he's doing the smart thing for his family and double dipping while working his way back up the coaching tree.
The Colts will play the Browns in Cleveland in 2014, though the date isn't yet set for that game. Should be fun for Chud though.
