Colts safety Joe Lefeged released from jail after gun arrest
Colts safety Joe Lefeged was released on his own recognizance Tuesday following a weekend arrest for gun possession.
When Lefeged was pulled over by police, per the Associated Press, they found a semiautomatic pistol in his car along with a bottle of vodka and said that the car smelled of marijuana.
USA Today reports that assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Schrader argued against Lefeged's release.
"This was a case of drugs and guns," Schrader said.
The prosecution also alleges that Lefeged attempted to flee the scene and that the pistol found by police was loaded.
"The gun was loaded with one round in the chamber and 12 rounds in the clip," Schrader said.
Lefeged's case will go to the grand jury as a result of him waiving his right to the hearing, but the judge handling the matter Tuesday, Judge Frederick Sullivan, also warned Lefeged about future issues.
"You get caught with a weapon or some drugs, you're going to jail," Sullivan said. "The flight problem bothers me more than anything, but that's for a judge down the road."
All told, Lefeged was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, having an unregistered firearm in the district, possessing unregistered ammunition, possessing a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of an open container of alcohol.
Lefeged was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and started four games for Indianapolis in 2012.
