Cortland Finnegan's top two picks for Super Bowl are Rams, Lions
Cortland Finnegan is particularly high on the Lions turning things around in 2013.
Picking who will win the Super Bowl before the season begins is a really difficult thing to do. So making fun of someone's super selections is an even more foolish enterprise, particularly when it's only June.
That being said, I'm not so sure I'd throw money down in Vegas based on Cortland Finnegan's prognostication. Finnegan, brought in to be a ringer at Stephen Tulloch and Nate Burleson's charity softball game, told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that he's picking the Rams or Lions to take the Lombardi Trophy.
“If we don’t win it, I’ll take the Lions winning it next,” Finnegan said.
Now, you'd certainly expect St. Louis to be Finnegan's No. 1 choice to win the Super Bowl next year. That would be one heck of an indictment of the Rams if he wasn't willing to make the perfunctory claim that they're the best this deep in the offseason.
And I guess the Lions make sense because he was basically there as a friend. What's he going to say when he's asked about the Lions turning things around? That he doesn't see them happening and he'd probably pick the Packers or Bears out of the NFC North first?
That'd be pretty juicy, but certainly Finnegan -- who admitted that he had some talks with Detroit before signing with St. Louis -- is smarter than that.
Only time will tell if he's as wise with his NFL predictions. At the very least, he'd end up getting some pretty good odds with his bets.
