Cowboys QB coach: Romo's deep throws inconsistent due to his back
While the expectation is that Tony Romo will be ready once the regular season starts, his position coach, Wade Wilson, says that he has struggled with his deep passes since returning to practice.
Quarterback Tony Romo, who underwent back surgery in December, won't be on the field Thursday when the Cowboys take on the Chargers. And while the expectation is that he'll be ready to go once the regular season starts, his position coach, Wade Wilson, says that Romo has struggled with his deep passes since returning to practice.
"It’s been OK. I think the deeper the ball goes down the field, it’s a little bit more inconsistent," Wilson said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "He’s thrown all the intermediates -- the fours and the seven routes and the deep outs -- have been fine. It’s just the nine routes and the deep posts. Those things have been a little inconsistent. I think that’s all due to his back."
Last week, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said that Romo was "100 percent," but that's clearly not the case -- not yet, anyway.
Wilson thinks Romo, 34, might be holding back on deep throws and it's affecting his consistency. But the coach, who has been a Cowboys assistant since 2007, isn't worried, primarily because the go-route isn't regularly featured in the game plan.
"With (wide receiver) Dez (Bryant), it’s been throwing more back shoulders," Wilson said. "Teams are playing so high on our receivers that we throw back shoulders than actual take-off nines."
Regardless of the play call, Wilson sounds unconcerned about Romo's ability to throw deep.
"He can get the ball down the field," the coach said. "That’s not an issue. As camp goes on, he’ll just get nothing but stronger and more confident in his throws."
And if Romo can't get the ball down the field ... well, there's always Brandon Weeden.
