Cowboys QB Tony Romo confirms he wants to play in HOF game
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett wants QB Tony Romo to sit out Sunday's Hall of Fame game. Romo, however, feels differently.
Back in May, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo underwent surgery to remove a cyst on his back. It forced him to miss OTAs, and now, according to coach Jason Garrett, Romo won't play Sunday when the Cowboys face the Dolphins in the Hall of Fame game.
Romo, however, has different ideas about what he'll be doing at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio, this weekend.
"If I did play, it would be a series, [so] whether you went eight plays or three plays, I'm not sure how much that is going to affect that," Romo said, via ESPNDallas.com. "Saying that, I still want to play every time I suit up. Every time I step out there -- your juices are flowing and you want to compete. From that perspective, yeah, but whatever the coaches want."
Yes, football players are competitive, so it's hardly surprising that Romo wants to be on the field. Then again, this is preseason, which means that starters will play a series, maybe two. If Romo isn't 100 percent, there's really no reason to put him out there. Which is what Garrett is thinking.
"It's one of those deals where I suppose he could play five plays or whatever, but we might lean to no plays," the coach said over the weekend. "But the clock starts on our [first-teamers] in Week 2 of the preseason. So that's not going to be Tony's game."
Romo, who signed a five-year, $108 million extension this spring, probably would be best served sitting out Sunday's game. The Cowboys have much bigger concerns beyond some meaningless preseason football -- namely, finding a way to get to the playoffs for the first time since the 2009 season.
