Cowboys' Stephen Jones on hosting NFL Draft: 'We like the idea'
Pretty much everyone agrees that delaying the NFL Draft two weeks has been a bad idea. And the league could move the event outside New York as soon as 2015.
Pretty much everyone agrees that delaying the NFL Draft two weeks has been a bad idea. The official reason the league's biggest offseason spectacle was moved to May 8 was because of a scheduling conflict at Radio City Music Hall (funny story: the show responsible for rescheduling the draft has been postponed).
"If a decision is made that the NFL draft leaves New York, I'm sure it will be a competitive bidding process," a source told Myers. "It hasn't been discussed placing it in any particular cities. A half dozen cities have approached the league and said, 'When you're ready to move, we're ready to host it.'"
Both Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel and Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II have already publicly lobbied for consideration in their respective cities. And Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said recently that Dallas would love to host the event.
"I think it’s something that the league is seriously taking a look at. They’ve actually looked at making it multi-locational in terms of doing a day in New York and a day in another city, something like that. There’s a lot of things being discussed. At the end of the day, we’re trying to make our game better for our fans, and that includes all aspects of it. Certainly, we want our fans to be able to get up close and personal looks and I think looking at something like this is something that our fans might enjoy.”
There's already talk that the league could expand the draft to four days, and even in its current three-day format, Myers suggests the possibility that the event could be held in a different city each day.
