Dolphins QB David Garrard to undergo knee surgery, will be out 2-4 weeks

As we saw in the first episode of Hard Knocks, David Garrard was the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart released by the Dolphins, and though incumbent starter Matt Moore didn’t love that move, he and first-round pick Ryan Tannehill also realized there was a long way to go until Week 1.

Especially if the quarterback at the top of the depth chart gets injured. Which is the case now, as the Chicago Sun-Times’ Sean Jensen was the first to report that Garrard will undergo surgery. According to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora, Garrard is expected to be out 2-4 weeks and that the arthroscopic surgery for a "minor clean-up" of the knee is scheduled for Saturday morning.
“Indications out of Miami [were] that David Garrard was playing well,” Jensen tweeted. “Sounds like [it’s] minor knee surgery but it comes at bad time for team.”
And yeah, a bad time for Garrard, who returned to the game after missing all of last season with a back injury to overtake (temporarily it turned out) Moore and Tannehill early in training camp. According to Dolphins radio, Garrard practiced Wednesday, but practice was closed to media Thursday.
According to La Canfora, a source who was with Garrard on Wednesday night said the quarterback "was walking normally and appeared perfectly fine."
If Garrard falls out of the starting quarterback race because of this surgery -- and it's a really good bet that he will -- it’s an unfortunate break for the guy who, for one day at least, looked better than Peyton Manning.
The Dolphins will play host to the Buccaneers on Friday night in both teams’ preseason openers.
