Geno Smith still Jets starting QB; Mark Sanchez out for Week 2
Geno Smith remains the Jets starting quarterback and Mark Sanchez is unable to play because he's injured and out.
In his first career game for the Jets, Geno Smith walked away with a victory. He wasn't perfect but he wasn't a full-blown disaster, and the Jets stunned the world.
And yet it's news today that he will remain the starting quarterback, with Mark Sanchez sidelined and preparing to head back to the doctor.
"He’ll start this game. Mark won’t play this game,” head coach Rex Ryan said Monday. "Geno will be the quarterback."
Man. I would really hope so. It's not that Geno lit things up. He didn't really. And quarterback wins shouldn't count but this was a pretty good performance for a rookie in his first game.
In other news, Mark Sanchez isn't ready to play. This is less of a surprise than the fact that Geno, who won and didn't look terrible, is going to play. In the meantime we get to wait to see what Sanchez hears back from Dr. Andrews.
“Well no, he’s still day-to-day with us,” Ryan said. “He’s not going to play this game. It’s a short week, he’s not going to play this game. This is a mutual thing with the team and Mark to let’s go get, find out exactly where he is, maybe a different opinion."
Don't worry though. Sanchez hasn't had a "setback or anything" like that. He's just injured and can't play.
“But he hasn’t had a setback or anything else,” the coach added. “He’s been doing a good job with his rehab, but this is just, the situation, clearly he’s not going to play this week. So let’s make sure that everything’s, that we are 100% confident in what we think we have.”
