Fantasy football team names

I've spent the past three weeks looking at all the fantasy team names CBSSports.com players are rolling out so far this season. I've seen team names like "Sharknado" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Bortles," surge as if fantasy owners were choosing between Jackson or Liam for their baby boy.

I've also noticed a few macro-level trends that I've been able to categorize below. But first, one name that's rising in popularity this week is Peanut Cutler Jeffery Time, which is the extremely rare thrice-name pop-culture reference (TNPCR). We've seen plenty dual-name references before (It Ertz When Eiferted, Forte Shades of Jay and so on) but the thrice-namer, as far as my research has taken me, seems to break new ground.

While Show Me Your TDs remains No. 1 on CBSSports.com, Turn Down For Watt has taken over the No. 2 spot from Da Bears. The complete top 10:

  1. Show Me Your TDs
  2. Turn Down For Watt
  3. Da Bears
  4. Mean Machine
  5. Bulldogs
  6. Steel Curtain
  7. Orange Crush
  8. Cowboys
  9. Victorious Secret
  10. Big Blue

Oy. Uninspiring. But while boring names litter the top 10, most of you seem to have similar themes on your minds. After staring all day at a list of around 3,000 of the most popular names, here's my analysis in pie-chart form.

Puns, need more puns.

One word of advice, think outside the pun. This week's recommendation comes courtesy of Rob Montoya, who encourages teams to go with "Off Constantly" for their team name. Give it a minute.
