Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy was arrested early Tuesday morning the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department told CBSSports.com.

Police confirmed Gregory McKarl Hardy (born on July 28, 1988) turned himself in on charges of Assault on a Female and Communicating Threats Tuesday morning.

Hardy was involved in an incident with a woman who claims she's been in a relationship with Hardy since September 2013. At 4:18 a.m. on Tuesday morning, officers responded to a domestic violence assault call and were told by the woman in question Hardy physically assaulted her.

"We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate," a Panthers spokesperson said in a statement.

According to the police incident report obtained by CBSSports.com, the woman in question declined medical treatment from the police and was under the influence of alcohol. Her injury type was described as "bruises/scratches."

WBTV obtained a copy of Hardy's mugshot.

Hardy, nicknamed "The Kraken," became a free agent this offseason. The Panthers used the franchise tag on the defensive end, who was coming off a 15-sack season.
