Jon Gruden describes Redskins veteran running back Alfred Morris as the "lead dog" in the backfield. The coach certainly didn't put those feelings to work Thursday night.

Morris received a mere 12 snaps despite starting in the loss to the Giants, compared to 39 for Chris Thompson and 26 for Matt Jones. Gruden said the reps for Morris were limited due to the substitution pattern and the lack of possessions in the second half as the team fell far behind and had to pass.

"It was nothing against Alfred, it was just it was Matt Jones's turn on a couple of those reps and we gave him some carries," Gruden explained to the Washington Post. "Alfred should be the lead dog though. It just didn't work out that way."

The way it has worked out for Morris has been a decline in opportunities and production after a 121-yard performance against Miami to open the year. He has since rushed for just 78 yards on 24 carries in two games.
