Texans quarterback Matt Schaub might not be starting on Sunday against Kansas City, but it has nothing to do with his recent struggles. Schaub suffered an ankle injury in Houston's loss to the Rams on Sunday and that injury could keep him from playing against the Chiefs.
Schaub was injured near the end of the third quarter against St. Louis, an injury that actually elicited cheers from the crowd at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
Coach Gary Kubiak said on Monday that starting Schaub in Kansas City will be an 'end of the week decision.' If Schaub can't go, that means either T.J. Yates or Case Keenum will get the start and Kubiak didn't say which guy he'd go with, "I'll prepare both Case and T.J.," Kubiak said.
Yates saw some playing time against St. Louis, but didn't do much to impress Kubiak. In just over a quarter of action, Yates threw two interceptions, including a 98-yard pick-six to Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree.
The pick-six gave Houston quarterbacks five straight games with a pick-six, setting an NFL record. Schaub had previously thrown a pick-six in the four consecutive weeks leading up to the St. Louis game.
If Kubiak decides Schaub is too hurt and Yates isn't good enough, that'd mean Case Keenum would be in line to make his first career start. The 25-year-old third string quarterback signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2012.
