Is Ryan Nassib in danger of not making Giants' 53-man roster?
If Giants coach Tom Coughlin wants to keep just two QBs on the 53-man roster, Ryan Nassib could be on the outside looking in with Curtis Painter winning the backup job behind Eli Manning.
More proof that the pre-draft hype machine just that: In the weeks and months leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft, former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib went from late-round afterthought to possible first-rounder. Feeding the speculation: Doug Marrone, Nassib's college coach, was the new coach in Buffalo, a team desperate for a franchise quarterback.
Marrone and the Bills ended up taking EJ Manuel, the only quarterback to go in Round 1. Three other passers would head their name called before Nassib went off the board to the Giants with the 110th pick.
As a rookie, Nassib struggled during preseason and didn't see the field once the regular season began. Neither was unexpected; it takes time for young players to adjust to the pace of the NFL. But this is a bottom-line business, as the old saying goes, and veteran backup Curtis Painter has outplayed Nassib this preseason. And if coach Tom Coughlin wants to keep just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, Nassib could be on the outside looking in.
"A few days ago this would have seemed impossible. Now, not so much," the Newark Star-Ledger's Jordan Raanan wrote Thursday. "Coughlin would prefer keeping two quarterbacks. Painter has served as the No. 2 this week. You do the math. It's still unlikely Nassib gets cut, but not completely out of the question right now. The 2013 fourth-round pick hasn't been impressive overall since the start of the offseason."
Whatever fate awaits Nassib, history isn't on his side. During the offseason, we looked at quarterbacks drafted in Rounds 4-7 and the findings weren't pretty. QBs taken on Day 3 will, on average, play two NFL seasons, will never be his team's primary starter, will sport a 2-5 career record (if he's lucky), complete 54.7 percent of his passes and throw 3 touchdowns against 6 interceptions.
