The Panthers defense won't get quite the test they normally would on Sunday night, as Jamaal Charles is out for the Week 2 preseason game.

Charles, per BJ Kissel of Chiefs.com, didn't even make the trip to Charlotte, owing to a bruised foot.

His absence is being called a "precaution" but clearly there's some concern with Charles missing the preseason game. (Although he was injured before the year last year and that worked out fine.)

Charles was the third-leading rusher in the NFL in 2013, compiling 1,287 yards for KC during the 2013 season. He also caught a whopping 70 passes for 693 yards, making him Kansas City's leading receiver last year.

With Dwayne Bowe set to be suspended a game and no real option available to the Chiefs at wideout, it's conceivable Charles could end up doing the same thing in 2014.

"Conceivable" in this case may actually mean "likely." Regardless, you won't see Charles do much of anything tonight.

Knile Davis, Cyrus Gray, De'Anthony Thomas and Charcandrick West will get the bulk of the carries, with a chance to prove their worth when it comes to toting the rock in the regular season.
