Jets GM: Milliner, Richardson at top of team's draft board
Jets GM John Idzik said Dee Milliner and Sheldon Richardson were at the top of his draft board when he was selecting.
There are plenty of people criticizing the Jets' draft choices on Thursday night. I listed them among my losers for the first round of the draft, while Pete Prisco gave them a D+ and a C for the two picks.
Both Dee Milliner and Sheldon Richardson are very good football players, but are they gonna help the Jets improve on last year's results? Seems doubtful, especially with the departure of Darrelle Revis. But rip them all you want -- John Idzik loves the picks and said that Milliner and Richardson were the two remaining players on the Jets board.
"We were very confident that with our positions in the draft that we could bring in some very impactful players to the Jets and we would also have the opportunity and flexibility to field some offers," Idzik said after the first round. "That’s just what happened tonight. In the end, the two players we drafted, Dee and Sheldon, they were two of our highest-rated players on our board by far. We’re extremely thrilled to have them as part of the New York Jets, and I think they’re going to make an immediate impact to our organization.
The other two guys? Per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, it was Tavon Austin and Chance Warmack.
So that obviously stings, and it indicates that, yes, the Jets were taking Tavon if the Rams don't trade up to No. 8 and grab him in the Bills' slot. (Nicely done, Buddy Nix. And you, too, Les Snead.)
It also indicates the Jets were willing to try to help the offense. But they didn't, and it's going to likely result in another season in which the Jets struggle on offense.
But maybe that works out fine for the Jets; Idzik could have a chance to really clean house and start rebuilding from scratch once 2013 is in the books. And when it's over, it's a good bet he'll have a shot to add another player high on his draft board to the Jets' roster.
