Jets QB Mark Sanchez benched for Greg McElroy

McElroy time! (US Presswire)

With Tim Tebow on the sidelines, there was no one to keep Mark Sanchez from getting reps at quarterback ... except himself. And Sanchez played his way onto the bench with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter, when he was replaced by Greg McElroy.

Yes, the same Greg McElroy who had never attempted an NFL regular-season pass. That's how ineffective Sanchez was, leading the Jets to zero points while going 10-for-21 with 97 yards and three interceptions.

Tebow, Sanchez's usual "backup," was inactive for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, hence the Internet still existing. He will be the subject of a conversation for Monday. (And then some.)

For now, it's McElroy's show: His first pass, a deep attempt to the left side of the field, was incomplete, but the crowd at the Meadowlands didn't seem to really care. They just kept going nuts for whatever the team and McElroy were doing without Sanchez under center, particularly for McElroy's first career completion, a high zinger to rookie wideout Stephen Hill.

Frankly, it's hard to blame them.
