Joe Namath: Jets have been 'deceptive' and 'misled' their fans
During a radio interview Thursday, former Jets star Joe Namath criticized the team, saying it had misled the fan base.
Joe Namath can’t stop making news with some of the words that come out of his mouth. And just as frustrating, we can’t seem to stop writing about it.
About a week after Namath made headlines by throwing his support behind embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez and saying the team doesn’t really need second-round pick Geno Smith, the outspoken former Jets star had more criticism for the team on Thursday.
During an interview on WFAN, Namath said the team was “deceptive” and had “misled” its fan base about how good the team really should be. In the same interview -- and this shouldn’t be a surprise because of what he had already said -- Namath said his relationship with Jets owner Woody Johnson was “uncomfortable.”
"I have not been on good terms with Mr. Johnson for the last couple of years,” Namath said.
Well, yeah. When Namath makes fat jokes about coach Rex Ryan or explains why then-free agent Peyton Manning should not sign with the Jets or when he criticizes the team’s game preparation, you can understand why his former team wouldn’t be such a big fan of his commentary.
“I wouldn’t say bad terms, you know?” Namath said. “Uncomfortable. Because I was saying earlier, you don’t like to hear negative things, negative vibes, and Woody I’m sure doesn’t like the criticism. I mean, when we’ve brushed shoulders in the past it hasn’t been the same as it was originally. We don’t talk -- ‘Hi, how are ya?’ “
Oh, and don’t get Namath started on PSLs.
“I still got a hangup over Personal Seat Licenses,” Namath said. “It's greed and it's unfair, but life is unfair.”
Perhaps so is Namath’s constant criticism of the Jets. But hey, that’s life, and when Namath talks, it, for some reason, remains newsworthy.
