Joe Namath: Michael Vick probably the best QB on Jets roster

Joe Namath isn't shy about dropping his football knowledge into the New York media punchbowl, swirling it around and seeing if he can stir hard enough to splash some that will stick on the wall.

Allow me to quote myself when I wrote this in May 2013 after he called the Jets a couple of nasty names: "Joe Namath can't stop making news with some of the words that come out of his mouth. And just as frustrating, we can't seem to stop writing about it."

That said, the former Jets superstar quarterback has weighed in on the current Jets quarterback situation, and he thinks Michael Vick should be the starter rather than Geno Smith.

"Of course, the coaches are going to decide who's out there, but, boy, I don't know any football fan that's been around for nine or 10 years that doesn't think Michael will be outstanding and probably is the best player at this time," Namath told ESPN New York on Tuesday. "If Mike's healthy, I think he's the better player at this point. Now, Geno's got some talent, no doubt, but we've obviously seen Michael and what he can do. To have some knowledge of [Marty Mornhinweg's] offense, I think that's an advantage, too, for Michael to make the transition. It's a matter of how sound he is."

That last point actually isn't a bad one. Before Mornhingweg was hired by Jets coach Rex Ryan as the team's offensive coordinator, he was Vick's offensive coordinator with the Eagles. But let's not forget: Since Vick made the Pro Bowl in 2010 with Philadelphia, he's been nothing more than an average quarterback who can't stay healthy, ultimately losing his job to Nick Foles last season.

Since the Jets drafted Smith, Namath has made it clear that he's not a huge fan.

Even after it appeared that Mark Sanchez's time in New York was done a year ago, Namath went on record saying he preferred Sanchez to Smith.

“No, I don't think they needed a quarterback,” Namath said after the Jets drafted Smith in the second round in 2013.

Yet, Michael Vick has said he's the backup quarterback at this point, so maybe Namath would be better served to offer some advice for Smith.

"The safest thing for me to say, the one factual thing for me to say that I know is his passing accuracy," Namath said. "The rest of it, I don't have a handle on -- his mind, what he sees, how he's doing those things. The one thing I know he has to improve on -- and he does, too -- is accuracy."
