Josh Freeman visits Bears Monday
The Bears are looking for a backup quarterback and CBS Sports Jason La Canfora reports Josh Freeman visited with them on Monday.
Per CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, Josh Freeman could be a candidate for that role. La Canfora reports Freeman visited the Bears on Monday, with the team also working out quarterback Adam Weber.
Freeman had a major fall from grace in 2013. His run with the Buccaneers straight up imploded and he was released when he didn't get along with then coach Greg Schiano. Freeman later signed with the Vikings but played in just one game, a Monday night start against the Giants that doubles as one of the more disastrous quarterback outings in NFL history.
He hasn't been mentioned much in recent months much, largely because of concerns with how his run with the Vikings went.
But Freeman's clearly got talent. And Marc Trestman's known as a quarterback guru (perhaps you prefer whisperer?) so it's possible that a fit could make sense.
Jay Cutler is the guy -- the Bears made that clear with an extension and their willingness to let McCown walk -- and Freeman wouldn't present any sort of challenge as a starter. But he could be an interesting signing as a backup with upside.
That's certainly something the Bears needed in recent years.
