Kirk Cousins has strong first half replacing Robert Griffin III
Kirk Cousins had a big first half against the Falcons, throwing for 248 yards. The Redskins controversy grows.
If you thought Sunday's Redskins game was going to calm down the drama in Washington, you were very much wrong. Kirk Cousins, stepping in for a benched Robert Griffin III, carved up the Falcons secondary in the first half of Week 15.
Cousins went 13 of 20 for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns en route to leading the Redskins to a 20-17 lead over the Falcons through 30 minutes of action.
It doesn't hurt that Cousins is going against a weakened Falcons secondary that ranks 29th in passing yards per play in the NFL.
As a result Cousins is getting easy reads and open receivers. But he's still making the right reads and still hitting the right throws.
The 248 yards he had in the first half is more than RG3 -- who was officially inactive on Sunday -- had in six different games for the Redskins this year.
Mike Shanahan's decision to start Cousins over Griffin drew plenty of criticism and only ramped up the controversy surrounding the 'Skins this week. But right now Shanahan looks pretty smart, even if the matchup is a simple one for Cousins.
