Klecko on Coples: Sometimes 'he looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane'
When asked about Quinton Coples, former Jets standout Joe Klecko said, 'A little bit of the time he looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.'
Joe Namath isn't the only former Jets standout capable of weighing in on the current roster (even if it just seems that way). On Friday, Joe Klecko, who played nose tackle for the Jets from 1977-87 and had 24 career sacks (7½ coming in 1985), also got in on the fun.
When asked about defensive end/outside linebacker Quinton Coples, taken 16th overall in 2012, Klecko got right to the point.
"A little bit of the time he looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane," Klecko said Friday during an appearance on WFAN, via the New York Daily News.
"Sometimes [Coples] gets out there and does things that are unbelievable," Klecko continued. "Well, you need to go out there and stick your nose in there every time and make sure everybody knows you're there. I think he has a lot to learn."
Klecko isn't alone in this assessment. ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini wrote Sunday that, "Coples has tested the patience of the coaches from the day he arrived, giving inconsistent effort. The talent is obvious, which explains the frustration level in the organization."
Last season, Coples started 13 games and registered 4½ sacks, 3½ coming in the final month of the season. But in fewer snaps as a rookie in 2012, he had 5½ sacks. And according to ProFootballFocus.com, Coples graded out as one of the league's least effective outside linebackers last season, ranking 32nd out of 42 players.
"I don't know him at all, but understanding attitude and body language, he sometimes comes out there I think and thinks 'Don't you know who I am? I'm here,'" Klecko said. "He has to start proving that he is something to be reckoned with."
Rex Ryan has a history for getting the most out of his players, particularly on defense. It's reasonable to think that he'll be able to motivate Coples, who showed improvement down the stretch last season.
