Lions' Amari Spievey facing charges after alleged domestic dispute
Detroit Lions' safety Amari Spievey was arrested on Tuesday in Connecticut after allegedly engaging in an altercation with his girlfriend over child support. Spievey, a fourth-year veteran, signed a one-year deal to remain with the Lions at the start of free agency. The former Iowa safety appeared in only five games in 2012 after suffering a concussion in late-October against the Bears.
Spievey, 24, was charged with third-degree assault, risk of injury to a child and disorderly conduct, the Middletown Press reported. Lisamarie Santos, Spievey’s girlfriend, also was charged with disorderly conduct and risk of injury, according to the Middletown Press.
The alleged incident took place at about 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Middletown, stemming from an argument over a child support payment. Santos allegedly pushed Spievey while he held their 2-year old daughter, police said, via the Middletown Press. Spievey pushed Santos back, according to police, and at one point put his hands around her neck. Both Spievey and Santos were scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on Wednesday.
Spievey’s future with the Lions alreadys was in question due to a spate of concussions over the past two seasons. Detroit placed the third-year safety on IR in mid-November four weeks after he suffered a concussion in a 13-7 loss to the Bears. Spievey was cleared by doctors to return during exit physicals in January. A season earlier, Spievey reportedly played through a concussion in an NFC Wild Card loss to the Saints. The after effects of the head injury were so severe that team doctors did not clear Spievey for the start of OTAs several months later.
The Lions chose not to tender the restricted free agent in the offseason, opting instead to sign Spievey to a one-year deal for $630,000. A third-round pick out of Iowa in 2010, Spievey has started 26 games for Detroit over the last three seasons. In 2011, Spievey started 15 games at safety for the Lions and finished fourth on the team in tackles with 70.
Spievey ended his prep career at Xavier High School in Middletown as the school’s all-time leading rusher. He finished with more than 4,000 total yards and 58 touchdowns on offense and with 16 interceptions and two returns for touchdowns on defense. After earning Connecticut Player of the Year honors in 2005, Spievey was rated No. 15 prospect in New England by Rivals.com.
During free agency, the Lions have re-signed safety Louis Delmas and have agreed to terms with former Texans safety Glover Quin on a pair of multi-year deals. Quin signed a five-year, $23.5 million contract with the Lions on Mar. 13.
“We are aware of the reports involving Amari Spievey," the Lions said in a statement. "We are in the process of gathering more information and will have no further comment at this time.”
The bond for Spievey was set at $5,000.
