Manti Te'o taught fellow Chargers rookie D.J. Fluker how to swim
D.J. Fluker didn't know how to swim. Until Manti Te'o taught him.
D.J. Fluker is a mountain of a man. So the thought of his much smaller Chargers teammate Manti Te'o holding him in the water while Fluker learns how to swim is a pretty bizarre thing to try and imagine.
But it's a visual that actually happened and yes, that was learns how to swim -- Fluker had a traumatic experience in a swimming pool as a child so he'd never learned to swim until Te'o decided to teach him recently.
"I was terrified of water," Fluker said. "He was like, 'Man, relax. I got you.' "
Te'o did for Fluker what Te'o's dad did for the linebacker: he held him in water, with his face underneath the water. Then Te'o taught Fluker how to float in the water while kicking.
"While lifting Fluker’s stomach to keep the lineman parallel, Te'o instructed Fluker to simultaneously kick his legs and dig his hands into the water," Michael Ghelken of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes. "So Fluker kept kicking and digging, kicking and digging, his size-22 feet and 10½-inch hands creating a sizable splash."
This had to be a ... scene, man. It's alternately the thing I least AND most want to see ever.
So did it work? Well, not the first time -- Te'o put Fluker on his own and he "just sank."
“He said, 'All right, I’m going to let you go,' " Fluker said. "I'm like, ‘Let me go? No, no, no, no, no.'
"I just sank."
Apparently on the second attempt at swimming, though, Fluker made it "a few feet," and after a few attempts the gigantic right tackle had figured out how to swim.
And how much more amazing does that make this whole thing? Not only is Te'o holding Fluker in the water is beyond hysterical to think about, but the former Notre Dame linebacker managed to teach Fluker how to swim in like 30 minutes or something. Maybe Fluker can repay the favor by teaching Te'o how to date.
