The Eagles are currently losing 10-0 to Pittsburgh in the first preseason game of the year, but there's much worse worse news for Philadelphia on Thursday, as Michael Vick left the game early after banging his throwing hand on center Jason Kelce's helmet.
Vick left the game wincing and was seen on the sideline in obvious pain, as captured by SB Nation. Vick was also spotted using a cup of ice water to cool down the thumb, which was in obvious pain.
Afterwards, Vick said, per Sheil Kapadia of PhillyMag.com, that he "thought it was broken" when he initially suffered the injury.
“When it first happened, because I heard a pop, I thought it was broken,” Vick said “And you react differently when you don’t know exactly what happened. I tried to get to the sideline as fast as I could. I did the same type of thing last year against Dallas, but I was able to come back the next week and play. But this time, I heard a pop, and thankfully it was because of the collision, not because of the broken bone.”
According to our Eagles Rapid Reporter Kevin Noonon, there's still no word about the extent of Vick's hand, but he "was smiling as he left as the team left the field at halftime."
Some good news came through after Vick left the game and was replaced by Nick Foles -- according to the Eagles, the X-ray on Vick's left thumb was negative.
Andy Reid said following the game that Vick suffered a thumb contusion after hitting a nerve on his thumb, but was "fine" by the end of the preseason game.
"By the end of the game, he was fine," Reid said after the game. "He could grip the ball."
The coach said the injury was "like a stinger on your thumb" that Vick should be fine going forward with no real problems. Vick finished the game going 3-for-4 for six yards passing.
Obviously that could change depending Vick's performance going forward, and Eagles fans would absolutely prefer that Vick move forward without issues. On the bright side, Nick Foles looked alright filling in, going 6-of-10 for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
