Mike Wallace shocked Dolphins coach raved about his game
Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman had only laudatory things to say about WR Mike Wallace's game vs. the Chargers. Wallace's response: 'I had 39 yards.'
Ten games into the 2013 season and Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace has yet to live up to the five-year, $60 million contract he signed in March. He hasn't come close, really. Heading into Week 12, Wallace has 44 receptions for 534 yards and one touchdown.
In Sunday's win over the Chargers, Wallace had four receptions for 39 yards, 17 of which came on one play. It doesn't look like much on paper, but it was enough to impress Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.
“I thought Mike had a tremendous ball game," Sherman said, via the Miami Herald. "He ran hard, and he ran his routes very disciplined. He was open on a number of occasion and sometimes it was protection issues and we didn’t get him the ball, other times we just didn’t get him the ball, but I thought Mike had a tremendous impact in that ball game, because he changed how they played us and allowed us an opportunity to control the game with some runs and what not.”
And that aspect of Wallace's game -- sheer speed and the looming threat of a big play -- has often been overlooked this season, primarily because he's been spectacularly unproductive.
Still, Wallace couldn't muster much excitement about Sherman's glowing assessment.
“He raved about the game I had?” Wallace asked. “I had 39 yards.”
As for the rest of the season, Wallace said, "It's all right, it’s OK. [It could be] a lot better," before making it clear that he's not frustrated.
“I’m fine. I just want to win football games. I need to make some plays, obviously,’’ he added. “That’s the only way to be productive, make more plays.’’
