NFL Draft: Jaguars select Denard Robinson in 5th round (135th pick)
The Jaguars select Denard Robinson in the 5th round (135th pick) of the 2013 NFL Draft.
NEW YORK -- Though he spent most of his career at Michigan as the Wolverines' quarterback, there was little chance that Denard Robinson was going to play that position at the NFL level. For the Jaguars, they’ve decided to make him a running back.
That’s the position that was announced for Robinson, at least, when Jacksonville took him with the second pick of the fifth round (No. 135 overall).
Which is basically what NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt was thinking when he said this last month: “His best NFL position might be running back -- even if he worked out at receiver at the combine -- as he can really make things happen when the ball is in his hands. It will be a coach's choice in the NFL for where Robinson ultimately lines up. Whichever team Robinson winds up with will need to have a plan in mind for him.”
There’s little question about Robinson’s athleticism, and he probably could play receiver in the league as well -- which he showed when he didn’t drop a pass (or a punt) at Michigan’s pro day.
Here’s hoping the rest of his pro career goes better than his recent first pitch at a Tigers game.
