NFL Draft: Seahawks select Jesse Williams in 5th round (137th pick)

The long wait is over for Alabama defensive tackle Jesse Williams. Rated as the 39th overall prospect by NFLDraftScout.com, Williams fell almost 100 spots further into the open arms of the Seattle Seahawks, who selected Williams with the fourth pick in the fifth round (137th overall) of Saturday's NFL Draft.

Williams has a unique story, the Australian native didn't start playing football until he was 14-years-old. He was originally recruited by Hawaii, but ended up at a community college because he was missing several classes he needed to be NCAA-eligible.

Williams transferred to Alabama in 2011 after spending two seasons at Arizona Western College and made an immediate impact on the Crimson Tide defense. Williams started all 13 games in his first year with the team, including the 2012 BCS title game where the Crimson Tide limited LSU to just 92 total yards.

As a senior, Williams anchored a defense that finished the season No. 1 in the nation against the run, allowing only 79.8 yards per game. Even though he was double-teamed most of the year, Williams still managed to tally 36 tackles and four quarterback hurries on his way to a second-team All-SEC selection.

In his predraft analysis, NFLDraftScout.com's Rob Rang called Williams a "cognitive defender, capable of reading the action, shedding the block with heavy active hands and making the tackle in the hole."

On the surface, a defensive tackle with a seemingly high ceiling seems like a smart pickup for the Seahawks.

Williams is the seventh Alabama player to be selected through the draft's first 137 picks.
