NFL focusing on Chicago, New York or LA to host 2015 NFL Draft
The 2015 NFL Draft will likely be held in either Chicago, New York or Los Angeles.
UPDATE: Apparently the NFL is casting a wider net than first believed, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter:
Not just CHI, LA in play for 2015 Draft; so are DAL, HOU, PIT, PHL, BOS, others. Each to submit info to NFL by mid June; decision late June.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) June 6, 2014
Original story: When NFL commissioner Roger Goodell mentioned that the league was thinking about moving the location of the draft, a dozen cities expressed an interest in hosting the NFL's biggest offseason event.
Those 12 cities have now been narrowed down to three that the NFL is focusing on: New York Chicago and Los Angeles. A leagues spokesman added that although the NFL is focusing on those three places, "Other cities remain in the mix."
If the league decides to hold the draft in New York again, the event won't he held at Radio City Music Hall. Instead, the draft would be held at Madison Square Garden, a venue that hasn't hosted the draft since 2004. According to NFL.com, the decision was made because RCMH won't be available in April or May 2015.
Goodell hinted last month that a move from Radio City Music Hall would probably happen.
"We're looking at the idea of that we move out of Radio City. We're looking at the potential of moving out of New York," Goodell said. "Radio City's been a great place for us but there's a lot of cities that are interested in having us in the future and we're looking at that. The two most aggressive probably are Chicago and Los Angeles but we've heard from a few more mayors also."
The NFL commissioner also hinted at a four-day draft, something that's looking more and more likely. According to NFL.com, the league is focusing two possible timeframes for the draft: Either April 22-25 or April 29-May 2. Both of those dates are four-day windows that run from Wednesday thru Saturday.
The NFL expects to make the final decision on which city will host the draft sometime this summer.
