NFL Week 1 by the numbers: Patriots have won nine straight openers
Here's everything you need to know heading into Week 1 of the NFL season.
If you need to impress people this weekend with your immense knowledge of the NFL, you can memorize an NFL encyclopedia -- which would probably take like three weeks -- or you can read this: our Week 1 football facts.
Always bet on Brady
The Patriots have won nine straight regular season openers. If that seems impressive, it is. Only three teams in NFL history have had longer opening day winning streaks. The Cowboys won 17 in a row from 1965-81, the Dolphins won 11 in a row from 1992-2002 and the Lions/Spartans won 10 in a row from 1930-39. That's Portsmouth Spartans, of course.
The last time Patriots lost a Week 1 game came on Sept. 7, 2003 when they lost to Buffalo 31-0. New England's opponent on Sunday? Buffalo.
Also always bet on the Harbaugh brothers
If your favorite team is facing a Harbaugh brother in Week 1, you don't even need to watch because your team is going to lose. At least, that's what usually happens. As head coaches, the Harbaugh brothers are a combined 7-0 on opening weekend. John sports a 5-0 record while Jim has a 2-0 record.
Another plus for John Harbaugh: defending Super Bowl champions are 12-1 in regular season openers since 2000.
If John Harbaugh's going to stay undefeated on opening day, he's going to have end another streak: the Broncos 11-game regular season winning streak. Denver's streak dates back to October 2012 and is currently the longest in the NFL.
Maybe a Harbaugh brother should coach the Panthers on Sunday. Carolina has the worst Week 1 winning percentage among the league's 32 teams. In 18 seasons, the Panthers have gone 6-12 (.333) on opening weekend.
The silver lining: Carolina plays Seattle on Sunday and the Seahawks aren't much better. Seattle has a .351 winning percentage, a number that ranks 30th in the league.
Marc Trestman: Future Bengals coach?
If the Bears lose to the Bengals on Sunday, there's a good chance that Marc Trestman will end up as Cincinnati's coach one day. At least that's what the numbers say.
The Bengals have won five games in franchise history against coaches making their NFL debut. Two of those coaches -- Forest Gregg and Bruce Coslet -- would later go on to coach the Bengals.
The Giants and Saints are both 0-6 in season openers against their opponents. New Orleans has never beaten Atlanta in Week 1 and the Giants have never beaten the Cowboys on the opening weekend of the season. New York got a crack at Dallas in the 2012 opener, but lost 24-17.
However, the Giants are 4-0 at Jerry-world or as AT&T is paying millions of dollars to have it called: AT&T Stadium.
Houston, we have a problem
The Texans have played the Chargers four times in franchise history and they've lost all four times. Houston's made the trip to San Diego twice and neither game was pretty for the Texans. In 2007, Houston lost 35-10 and in 2002, the Texans lost 24-3.
