Nick Fairley avoids jail time for 2012 DUI, given suspended sentence
Nick Fairley won't serve any jail time for his 2012 DUI arrest, but it's unclear what the NFL's next move will be.
On Thursday, that latter case was finally resolved as Fairley was given a six-month suspended jail sentence for the DUI along with one year of probation, according to Fox 10 TV (via the Detroit Free Press).
Fairley apparently was supposed to be in court Thursday, but instead, he was practicing with his Lions teammates. Fairley's lawyer told the TV station that he didn't tell Fairley that he was mandated to be in court. But the judge said Fairley was not considered a flight risk, so he sentenced him without Fairley in attendance.
At this point, it's unclear if the NFL will punish Fairley, who's coming off his most productive season with six sacks and two fumble recoveries in 2013.
“Nick’s had a good offseason thus far,” Detroit GM Martin Mayhew said recently. “You guys may have forgotten: He had an injury at the end of 2012. It took him awhile to get over that, which kind of set him back a little bit, in terms of his preparation. But this year, he’s been healthy, he’s been engaged, he’s been in the weight room, doing things that we’ve asked him to do. So I’ve been happy with what he’s done to date.”
