Ozzie Newsome as next Alabama AD? Maybe someday, but not now
Will Ozzie Newsome become the AD at his alma mater, Alabama? Maybe someday, but likely not now, Jason La Canfora reports.
Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome is an Alabama Crimson Tide product with a strong affinity for the school, close ties there and someone whom many friends think will eventually end up back with the football and/or atheltic program at some point.
With news of the school's athetic director stepping down on Wednesday, attention will immediately turn to Newsome and any potential interest in the position. Several team sources who know Newsome well said they certainly could see him back at Alabama at some point but got no sense he would be leaving now. He and the front office completed the league meetings and are still working to sign free agents and prepare for the draft.
The Ravens already have a successor to Newsome on staff, with Eric DeCosta tapped by owner Steve Bisciotti to replace Newsome whenever the Hall of Fame tight end moves on. But it remains Newsome's call as to when he hands over the reigns to the franchise. And those close to him would be surprised if it happened now.
This despite the Ravens coming off their second Super Bowl title under Newsome and with the team undergoing a roster purge of sorts this offseason. One that included the retirement of longtime leader Ray Lewis and what is looking increasingly like the imminent departure of future Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed to Houston.
