Packers WR Jordy Nelson ready for contract extension
After coming off one of the best seasons of his career, Packers receiver Jordy Nelson is ready to get paid.
As Packers receiver Jordy Nelson enters the final season of his three-year, $12.6 million deal, he's coming off a 2013 season in which he caught a career-high 85 passes for a career-best 1,314 yards and eight touchdowns.
So yeah, that prior contract was a pretty sweet outcome for Green Bay. Not surprisingly, Nelson is ready for his next contract extension. And he'd prefer to get it done before the season begins.
“I haven't thought that far. I guess I'm more focused on hoping it gets done before that,” Nelson said, via the Green Bay Press Gazette. “Obviously you want to get it done as soon as possible, but there are a lot of other people involved in that. It's a process, we'll just have to wait and see how it goes.”
Nelson said he and his agent haven't given the Packers a deadline, but the paper notes that he is "under the impression talks could heat up with the NFL draft over and the roster largely settled."
Randall Cobb also could be due for an extension, but he said he's not sure of the status of any contract negotiations. If, for whatever reason, one or both receivers aren't extended, Green Bay has taken some precautions, drafting receivers Davante Adams in the second round, Jared Abbrederis in the fifth and Jeff Janis in the seventh. Still, without Nelson and Cobb, that receiver room would be awfully young.
"If I were to walk and you’ve got Randall could possibly walk, now you’re down to all rookies besides (Jarrett Boykin),” Nelson said. “I think it’ll be different. I wouldn’t be surprised if stuff starts picking up soon now that the draft and everything’s done with. There’s a time frame they work off of, so I’ve been informed of that so we’ll just wait and see when it hits. Everyone knows, deals get done closer to training camp.”
