Panthers sign former Eagles WR Jason Avant to one-year deal
Former Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant will be catching passes from Cam Newton in 2014 after signing with the Panthers on Monday.
In the first five days of NFL free agency, it looked like the Panthers plan was to play the 2014 season without a wide receiver. Carolina sat back and watched as Steve Smith (Baltimore), Brandon LaFell (New England), Ted Ginn (Arizona) and Domenik Hixon (Chicago) all signed with different teams.
"We are happy to have Jason with the Panthers," head coach Ron Rivera said. "He provides a versatile player at receiver and brings good size as well as experience to the position."
The former Eagles receiver started a career-high 14 games in 2013 and caught 38 passes for 447 yards and two touchdowns. Avant isn't a No. 1 wide receiver, but he's a solid contributor who's topped the 375-yard mark in six of his eight NFL seasons.
