Panthers trade former Oregon RB Kenjon Barner to Eagles
The Panthers traded former Oregon star running back Kenjon Barner to the Eagles on Tuesday.
Kenjon Barner is going home, sort of. The Panthers dealt the former running back to his old coach on Tuesday night, sending Barner to the Eagles in exchange for a conditional seventh round pick in 2015.
Barner totaled 3,623 rushing yards (6.2 yards a carry) and 591 receiving yards for Chip Kelly while playing at Oregon from 2009 through 2012. He totaled just six rushes for seven yards and two receptions for seven yards in eight games as a rookie for the Panthers.
“Kenjon will hopefully bring some depth to both our running back and return positions. He’s obviously a guy I know really well from Oregon, where he had a very productive career," Kelly said in a statement. "He has a lot of speed, explosiveness and had a knack for making some really big plays. But our plan with him right now is get him in Philadelphia as soon as we can and plug him in at running back and returner and let him compete."
The returner thing could be interesting -- Barner had more than 1,000 kick return yards with Oregon in 2009.
He was a sixth-round pick for the Panthers in 2013; acquiring a "conditional seventh-round pick" is basically saying "he was getting cut."
Still, the Eagles could use the running back depth and Kelly has a history of using Barner well. At the very least it's an interesting transaction to monitor.
It's certainly good news for Fozzy Whittaker, who backed up his awesome name with a strong game (13 carries, 71 yards) against the Chiefs on Sunday night.
