Philip Rivers passes Dan Fouts as Chargers all-time passing leader
Philip Rivers just passed a legend in the Chargers record book
There's a new all-time leading passer in Chargers history.
Going into Thursday night's game against the Broncos, Philip Rivers needed to throw for just 125 yards to pass Dan Fouts as the all-time leading passer in Chargers history. Apparently, Rivers wanted to get the record out of the way early because he didn't waste any time passing Fouts.
The Chargers quarterback went 10 of 12 for 119 yards in the first quarter against Denver, leaving him just six hards shy of breaking Fouts' record.
Rivers then went on to break the record with a 12-yard pass to Hunter Henry on the second play of the second quarter.
The game didn't stop though because the Chargers didn't want to interrupt any momentum from their offensive drive. However, the officials did pull the ball off the field so Rivers would have it for later.
The pass to Henry gave Rivers 43,046 yards for his career. Fouts ended his 15-year career in San Diego with 43,040 yards. Fouts, who spent his entire career in San Diego, is ranked 14th on the NFL's all-time passing yards list. Rivers is now ranked 13th, one spot behind Ben Roethlisberger.
Despite being two of the most prolific passers in NFL history, neither quarterback was ever able to get the Chargers to a Super Bowl. Fouts led San Diego to two AFC title games, but lost both. Rivers has been to one AFC title game, which ended with a 21-12 loss to the then-undefeated Patriots after the 2007 season.
