Picks for Week One of the NFL season
With the opening week of NFL play upon us, Pat Kirwan breaks down his picks for each game.
New York Giants over Dallas Cowboys : Dallas Cowboys has only sacked Eli Manning four times in the past six meetings and the Giants are 5-1 in those games. Closer than people think but N.Y. prevails.
Chicago Bears over Indianapolis Colts : The Bears are at home with Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall back together. Indy will win games this year with Andrew Luck , but not this one because no one on the Colts can block Julius Peppers .
Philadelphia Eagles over Cleveland Browns : Too many rookies starting for the Browns against an Eagles team that finished strong last year.
Buffalo Bills over New York Jets : Buffalo Bills gets three points and they have a pass rush that the Jets can’t block. Buffalo picked off then- Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow three times last season -- so keep that in mind if he is in the Jets' wildcat.
New Orleans Saints over Washington Redskins : The emotion and noise in the Superdome are too much for rookie QB Robert Griffin III , who will be trying to keep up with Drew Brees and an offense that averages nearly 40 points a game at home.
New England Patriots over Tennessee Titans " data-canon="Tennessee Titans" data-type="SPORTS_OBJECT_TEAM" id="shortcode0">: Last season, the Patriots averaged more than 30 points for the first five games. Tom Brady has his offense greased up and ready to go. Jake Locker has thrown 66 passes in his NFL career and won't have suspended Kenny Britt.
Houston Texans over Miami Dolphins : Houston plays a very aggressive brand of defense and Ryan Tannehill isn’t ready for the pressure -- plus he doesn’t have enough weapons.
Jacksonville Jaguars over Minnesota Vikings : Neither team is going to be impressive this year but the Jags get four points. I think we see MJD before we see a lot of AP.
Detroit Lions over Los Angeles Rams : The Lions at home with QB Matt Stafford attacking a rebuilding defense. Too much inexperience in the Los Angeles Rams secondary.
Atlanta Falcons over Kansas City Chiefs : If the Chiefs had Tamba Hali I would have gone the other way, but Matt Ryan gets the time to find his targets.
Green Bay Packers over San Francisco 49ers : It’s tough to stay up with the Green Bay Packers passing game in their stadium. They average 41 points a game at home and that is not the style of game the 49ers want to play.
Carolina Panthers over Tampa Bay Buccaneers : The Panthers are ready to take the next step in their development and the Bucs looked stagnant this summer.
Seattle Seahawks over Arizona Cardinals : I don’t think the Cardinals' offensive tackles can protect John Skelton long enough to get the ball to Larry Fitzgerald enough.
Denver Broncos over Pittsburgh Steelers : I like the matchups of Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas against the Steelers' secondary, and I expect Peyton Manning to spread out Pittsburgh Steelers 's defense.
Baltimore Ravens over Cincinnati Bengals : The Bengals did not beat a playoff team last year and they lost two starting offensive linemen this summer.
Los Angeles Chargers over Oakland Raiders : This one is a toss-up and Philip Rivers is only 1-3 in his past four against Oakland Raiders . Antonio Gates , Robert Meacham and Malcom Floyd get it done against the Raider secondary.
