Pierre Garcon came into the offseason as our 48th-ranked free agent. He didn't last long on the market and has signed with the Redskins, according to Garcon's Facebook page.
Garcon also tweeted out the message that he'd signed with Washington.
"I wanted you all to hear it from me 1st before u saw it on the news... I will be signing with the Washington Redskins and I'm very excited about the opportunity in front of me," Garcon wrote on Facebook. "I want to thank all Colts fans from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support you've shown me the past 4 years and I hope that at some level u will still follow my career, as I will continue to share my life with you on here."
According to Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com, Garcon received a five-year contract worth $42.5 million, with "roughly" $21.5 million in guaranteed money. That's a lot of cheese for a guy of Garcon's talent.
The Redskins supplemented Garcon with former 49ers wideout Josh Morgan, an underrated talent. According to Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network, the Redskins landed Morgan on a two-year deal worth more than $6 million per year.
But wait, there's more! Eddie Royal, who Shanahan drafted in Denver, is reportedly close to signing with the Redskins too according to multiple reports. However, those same reports indicate that the deal isn't done just yet.
All of this is interesting because the Redskins, as you may know, suddenly might find themselves in a tough cap-space situation, thanks to contracts they handed out in 2010. Washington appears to be approaching the situation with the idea that they won't be penalized regardless, though.
No wide receivers on Washington's roster (looking at you, Santana Moss) should feel entirely safe right now, as it looks like the Redskins are re-booting their depth at wideout to keep pace with the addition of Robert Griffin III.
However, none of Garcon, Morgan and Royal are true No. 1 wideouts. They're "WR3" guys with "WR2" upside, depending on the situation. And all have been inconsistent or dealt with serious injury.
But it wouldn't be the offseason if the Redskins weren't overpaying at the start of free agency.
