Prince Amukamara: Some Giants call me 'Black Tim Tebow'
Here's something we never, ever expected to read today (or ever): Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara is known to some of his teammates as the 'Black Tim Tebow.'
The backstory: Amukamara, who, it turns out, is actual royalty, told Muscle and Fitness in a recent interview that he takes great pride in never putting alcohol in his body and maintaining his commitment to celibacy. Those two facts have everything to do with the comparison to the former Heisman Trophy winner.
"Yeah, some people call me the Black Tim Tebow," Amukamura admitted, adding: "Yeah, I am a virgin. I’m not ashamed to say that."
Slow-clap for Amukamara. In a profession where we're regularly reporting on off-field issues that range from plain dumb to mouth-agape inconceivable, it's nice to hear about a player who not only can live within the confines of the law but actually seems to be a decent human being.
"We met in New York," Amukamara said of his fiancee. "We were out dancing. I was just drawn to her. ... I said, 'Are you waiting for someone?' And she said, 'Yeah.'
"So I didn’t know what else to say after that so I started walking away," he continued. "But my teammates, Corey Webster and Aaron Ross, made me go back. They were like, 'Go say something to her!' And they were cheering me on. She thought we were all rowdy and drunk and she didn’t pay us any attention. Then, later, I was waiting for Ahmad [Bradshaw] and she came by and we struck up a conversation. I asked her for her email address because when someone asks for your number, it might be too personal and you might not want to give it. But if you ask for their e-mail address, they’ll give it. I was right."
Amukamara also talked about the video that emerged prior to the 2012 season that showed his Giants teammates, with linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul front and center, dumping him in an ice bath. The media called it hazing and coach Tom Coughlin ended up publicly addressing the situation.
But Amukamara explained that it had nothing to do with hazing. Just the opposite, in fact.
"The whole cold tub thing wasn’t just JPP, it was like eight guys," he said. "And it definitely was not anything personal. That wasn’t the first time I was in the cold tub, it was just the first time anyone saw it. And what the video doesn’t show is what happened 15-20 seconds after that, which is all of us messing around. JPP is great. I just saw him this morning and he was congratulating me on my engagement because I just [got] engaged this past Friday. So there’s no hard feelings. It wasn’t a personal situation."
The takeway: Amukamara's teammates have to do better than "Black Tim Tebow." Because unless he struggles to read defenses, and throws a football with his left hand like he's really right-handed, we don't see the similarities.
