Raiders rookie QB Matt McGloin to start Thursday vs. Cowboys
Raiders undrafted rookie free agent QB Matt McGloin will make this third start of the season against the Cowboys this Thursday.
Five days ago, Raiders coach Dennis Allen named undrafted rookie quarterback Matt McGloin the starter for the Week 12 game against the Titans, despite the fact that Terrelle Pryor was healthy enough to play.
And when the Raiders face the Cowboys Thursday, McGloin will make his third consecutive start, Allen said.
“Yeah, I thought Matt played well,” Allen said, via ESPN.com. “And for him to lead us back when we needed a touchdown, he got us the touchdown we needed to give us the lead. We just couldn’t hold it defensively.”
McGloin completed 19 of 32 passes for 260 yards in Oakland's 23-19 loss to Tennessee and led a fourth-quarter, 75-yard drive that ended in a 27-yard touchdown pass to Marcel Reese that gave Oakland a 19-16 lead.
The problem: The Raiders' defense couldn't get off the field, the Titans scored, and Oakland lost for the seventh time this season.
“Just couldn’t get things going early on, you’re going to have days like that, unfortunately that was one of those days today,” McGloin said. “But I thought we did a good job of adjusting at halftime. and it was great to see that we were able to make those changes and continue to get better and figure things out and work things out.”
Meanwhile, Pryor, who started eight games this season (42.3 completion percentage, 5 TDs, 10 INTs, 504 rushing yards), will continue to serve as McGloin's backup. For how long remains to be seen; last week, Allen was asked if McGloin could be the starter beyond the Titans game and he said, “this is a production business.”
Which we take to mean: If McGloin keeps producing, he'll keep playing.
