Ravens release fullback Vonta Leach
The Ravens released another veteran Tuesday, letting fullback Vonta Leach go free.
CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported Monday afternoon that the Ravens were preparing to release fullback Vonta Leach in the event they couldn't find a trade partner for him. They couldn't and now Leach has been released.
The former ECU Pirates star spent the last two years blocking for Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce and paving the way for an impressive rushing attack. Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome wouldn't rule out a return to Baltimore for Leach.
“There could be an opportunity for him to return to the Ravens once he explores the free agent market," Newsome said.
The release was all but confirmed later on Monday when Leach began tweeting his goodbyes to the city of Baltimore.
Thank @ravens organization for a great two years. I came here and did what we set out to do and that's win the Super Bowl. My time here— VontaLeach44 (@vleach44) June 10, 2013
here is up but what we accomplished, we will be forever linked. Thank the fans for accepting me and my family to Bmore. #newchapter#samegoal— VontaLeach44 (@vleach44) June 10, 2013
Leach is the latest veteran to move on from the Super Bowl champions, part of a purge designed to help the team remain competitive over the short- and long-term.
Though fullbacks aren't quite as important in today's game as they used to be, it wouldn't be stunning if Leach found work pretty quickly. He's blocked for Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Rice and Pierce over the last four years, netting three-straight All-Pro awards (and three-straight Pro Bowls) while his teams succeeded at rushing the ball.
