RB Peyton Hillis signs with Buccaneers
RB Peyton Hillis signs with the Bucs, and could provide depth behind second-year star-in-the-making Doug Martin
In 2010, Peyton Hillis rushed for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns for an otherwise hapless Browns outfit. A year later, he was angling for a new deal, which may or may not have affected his productivity. By the time 2011 was over, Hillis had played in just 10 games, rushed for 587 yards, and scored three times. And instead of a new contract, the Browns let him hit free agency, where he ended up signing on for one season with the Chiefs. And now Hillis has a new home: Tampa Bay, where, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, he's signed another one-year deal.
With the Buccaneers, Hillis will likely replace LeGarrette Blount on the depth chart. Blount was traded to New England this offseason. Both players have "run through you instead of around you" styles, and -- in theory, anyway -- Hillis could be a nice complement to second-year back Doug Martin.
One concern: Hillis hasn't been productive since '10. He played in 13 games last season for the Chiefs but averaged just 3.6 yards per carry.
Upside: Hillis was on the Madden 12 cover and earning that distinction always works out well. (We'll avoid any mention of Hillis as Mike Alstott 2.0 because, well, we're guessing that would really bum Mike Alstott out.)
