Redskins coach Mike Shanahan hopes to have Rex Grossman back

It's not often a head coach will come out and publicy say he wants his third-string quarterback to return, but Redskins coach Mike Shanahan did just that this week.

Shanahan said he wants Rex Grossman to return to Washington, which makes sense because Grossman could be the No. 2 quarterback if Robert Griffin III isn't healed by the time the season opener rolls around in September.

"I expect him to be back ... I'd like to have Rex back," Shanahan told the Washington Post.

Grossman originally signed with Washington in March 2010, just two months after Shanahan was hired as head coach. In three seasons with the Redskins, Grossman has started 16 games, going 6-10.

But Grossman's chances of starting again in Washington took a nose dive in April 2012 when the Redskins selected Griffin with the second overall pick in the draft. Shanahan immediately named RG3 the starter, which put Grossman in a battle with rookie Kirk Cousins for the backup spot, a battle Cousins eventually won

If Griffin recovers quickly from his knee injury, Grossman -- who started for the Bears in Super Bowl XLI -- will have to decide if he's satisfied spending another season as a No. 3 quarterback.
