Former Super Bowl-winning Redskins quarterback Doug Williams has joined the front office where he will work with general manager Bruce Allen, the team announced Monday.

“It’s great to be home again,” Williams said in a statement. “It also is great to be affiliated with a GM and coach who are so focused and dedicated to winning. I have only one mission: to help this team obtain the talent it needs so the fans can experience the Super Bowl they deserve.”

According to the Washington Post, Williams and the organization had been discussing the job in recent weeks and by Monday the move was official.

“We are focused on finding people with genuine football insight and a passion for winning,” Allen said in a statement. “As a player, coach and scout, Doug has seen it all and done it all, and we believe he has an incredible talent for identifying the type of players we want with the Redskins.”

Williams, who played for the Redskins from 1986 and 1989, was named MVP of Super Bowl XXII after throwing for 340 yards and four touchdowns in Washington's 42-10 victory over Denver.

He'll now be tasked with helping the Redskins and new coach Jay Gruden rebound from a 4-12 campaign that saw second-year quarterback Robert Griffin III regress to the point where he was benched for the final three games. The fallout led owner Dan Snyder to fire coach Mike Shanahan after a 24-40 record over four tumultuous seasons.

Williams had previously served as the football coach at Grambling where he was fired last September.
